Pendulum – Satisfying 3D Dynamics Animation

A personal 3D animation study exploring rhythmic pendulum movement, dynamic constraints and satisfying mechanical motion in Cinema 4D.

The main challenge in this project was to create a controlled transfer of movement between multiple suspended elements while keeping the timing, spacing and collisions visually convincing.

Dynamic Constraints were used to manage the suspended objects, while a MoGraph Cloner helped build and organise the repeated structure. The setup needed to remain stable enough to produce a clean rhythmic sequence while still preserving the natural response of the dynamics.

Particular attention was given to timing and collision behaviour. Small changes to spacing, constraint settings or movement could quickly disrupt the visual rhythm, so the simulation was refined until the sequence felt balanced, predictable and satisfying to watch.

The project was initially developed from techniques demonstrated in a CG Shortcuts tutorial, then reworked with a different visual direction. New materials, colours, lighting, movement and overall scene presentation were created to give the final piece its own look.

The animation was created in Cinema 4D and rendered with Arnold, with final compositing completed in Adobe After Effects.
