Patterned Pillows – 3D Cloth Animation

The Patterned pillows animation explores soft forms, patterned materials and realistic stitching through a playful sequence of simulated cushions.

Personal project 2023

This personal project explores how soft pillows can deform, collide and still retain a clear shape.

The main challenge was to balance softness with control. Rigid settings weakened the cushioned look, while excessive flexibility caused collapse and instability.

First, Cinema 4D’s Volume Builder shaped the rounded pillow forms. Detailed edges and stitching then added enough realism for close-up views.

Next, cloth simulation and Field Forces created the movement. The pillows twist, compress and react to one another while preserving their inflated volume.

Patterned fabric materials give each object a distinct identity. They also make the folds and surface deformation easier to read during motion.

Lighting and camera composition reveal the fabric texture, seams and changing silhouettes. Adobe After Effects then supports the final compositing and refinement.

A Greyscalegorilla tutorial inspired the original technique. The finished Patterned pillows animation develops it into a focused study of cloth behaviour, materials and soft-form motion.
